The House prosecution panel wrapped up its Article II evidence in the Senate impeachment trial, presenting expert testimony that Vice President Sara Duterte hid P817.87 million in assets.
Financial forensic analyst Alexander Cabrera told senators that Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, accumulated undeclared assets from 2022 to 2025 worth more than P98.66 million, which is more than eight times the amount reported in her 2025 SALN.
Cabrera, a certified public accountant, cited subpoenaed anti-money-laundering files and bank records showing yearly non-disclosures that enabled money laundering in 2024.
The trial also highlighted an active Bureau of Revenue audit of Carpio’s Cale88 Foods Corp., as well as questions about Duterte’s continued listing of GenCorp Industries Inc. in her SALN despite her name being absent from its corporate records.
Prosecutors presented records of banking activity, including a one-hour period on Aug. 6, 2024, when Duterte and Carpio withdrew P41 million in cash. They also cited records of large personal spending.
Defense spokesperson Michael Poa countered that the evidence presented was strictly one-sided, as trial managers briefly took down the Day 37 livestream due to an inadvertent display of unredacted tax documents.
Trial managers dropped Article III, which involved DepEd bribery charges, to speed up the proceedings. The defense is set to begin presenting its evidence. Irene O. Obniala/JourKnows PH
