President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. made no mention of Vice President Sara Duterte’s ongoing impeachment trial during his 2026 5th State of the Nation Address (SONA), despite the issue dominating the country’s political aspect.
Prior to the SONA, Malacañang had already indicated that the President would not interfere in the impeachment process, stressing respect for the independence of the legislative branch. The omission comes as the Senate continues to convene as an impeachment court to hear allegations against Duterte. The case had intensified political tension and is widely seen as defining issue ahead of the 2028 elections.
The absence of any statement on the impeachment proceedings underscores the administration’s stance of non-intervention in a politically sensitive case now unfolding in the Senate.
