Germany has committed to providing drones to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), signaling deeper security and defense cooperation between Manila and Berlin amid continuing concerns over regional maritime security.
The commitment was announced following a bilateral meeting between President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Malacañang on June 16, during the latter’s official visit to the country.
Steinmeier said Germany would continue working with the Philippines on defense-related initiatives, including participation in future military exercises. The assistance comes as both nations seek to strengthen cooperation on security issues and the protection of international maritime routes.
During a joint press conference, the German leader pointed to the continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, as a matter of concern.
”The situation in the South China Sea, or as the Philippines would call it the West Philippine Sea, continues to be tense and that gives us cause to be concerned,” Steinmeier said.
He noted that developments in the Indo-Pacific region have implications beyond Asia, particularly for countries that rely on international trade and maritime transport.
Steinmeier emphasized the importance of respecting international law and maintaining freedom of navigation, citing the impact of disruptions to global shipping routes on supply chains and commodity prices.
Apart from security cooperation, the two leaders also discussed economic relations between the Philippines and Germany. Steinmeier expressed support for the proposed Free Trade Agreement between the Philippines and the European Union, saying Germany hopes negotiations will be completed soon to further boost trade and investment opportunities.
The visit marked a significant milestone in the more than seven decades of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Germany. Steinmeier is the first German head of state to visit the Philippines since 1963.
Germany and the Philippines continue to expand cooperation in areas such as security, trade, and investment as both countries navigate evolving regional and global challenges.
