The Philippine National Police (PNP) urged government agencies to review and strengthen their cybersecurity measures after hackers defaced the official websites of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
According to PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., the growing cyber threats have necessitated more effective digital measures and coordination among agencies tasked with protecting government networks.
“This incident serves as a reminder that cybersecurity must remain a top priority of all government agencies. We encourage institutions to regularly review their security protocols, update their systems and strengthen monitoring mechanisms against evolving cyber threats,” Nartatez said.
A group of hackers named “Nullsec Philippines” claimed responsibility for defacing the website of the Senate on Saturday, June 13. They explained that these attacks were carried out in protest of alleged corruption within the government.
While the recent hack on the official website of the House of Representatives was days apart, the investigation is ongoing and neither “Nullsec Philippines” or other party has claimed responsibility.
PNP Chief Nartatez said that the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) has been tasked to coordinate with House information and cybersecurity personnel to determine the source, method, and extent of the breach.
“I have ordered the ACG to immediately coordinate with the House of Representatives and other relevant agencies. We will pursue a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible for the breach are identified and held accountable,” Nartatez said.
The PNP has said that criminal charges under existing cybercrime laws will be filed against those responsible for the attacks.
