MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court (SC) launched commemorative banknotes, coins, and postage stamps on June 10 as part of activities marking its 125th anniversary, highlighting the institution’s long-standing role in the country’s justice system.
Held at the SC Session Hall in Manila, the ceremony brought together members of the judiciary, officials from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), and representatives from the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost).
Leading the event was Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo, alongside several associate justices and court officials. BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona Jr. and PHLPost Postmaster General Maximo C. Sta. Maria III also attended the launch.
Among the commemorative items introduced was a ₱125 coin struck in Nordic gold, symbolizing the Court’s 125 years of service. The BSP also presented a ₱3,000 commemorative banknote, the first Philippine banknote to feature a vertical design.
The commemorative currency, while recognized as legal tender, are intended primarily as a collectors’ item. Both the coin and banknote will be made available for purchase through the BSP and the newly established SC Gift Shop.
Meanwhile, PHLPost released a special stamp set dedicated to the Court’s milestone anniversary. The stamps will be sold at the PHLPost Central Office in Manila and at the SC Gift Shop.
SC spokesperson Atty. Camille Sue Mae L. Ting said the commemorative releases serve as lasting symbols of the judiciary’s contribution to the nation’s history and legal development.
The event also featured the signing of the official First Day Cover by Chief Justice Gesmundo and Sta. Maria, a customary practice in commemorative stamp issuances.
According to SC Clerk of Court En Banc Atty. Marife M. Lomibao-Cuevas, the anniversary celebration not only reflects on the Court’s history but also underscores its continuing efforts toward modernization and institutional reform.
The launch forms part of a series of activities commemorating the Supreme Court’s 125th year since its establishment, recognizing its role in upholding the rule of law and delivering justice to Filipinos.
