The Senate of the Philippines confirmed on Thursday, June 11, that its official website had been subjected to a cyberattack involving unauthorized modifications to its contents, commonly known as website defacement.
In a statement, the Senate’s Electronic Data Processing and Management Information System (EDP-MIS) said its technical team immediately activated security protocols upon detecting the incident, contained the issue, and launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause and extent of the unauthorized activity.
According to the Senate, initial findings showed no indication that confidential or sensitive information had been compromised during the attack.
Officials noted that the website primarily hosts publicly available documents and informational materials intended for public access.
The Senate also announced that additional security measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Website defacement is a form of cyberattack in which unauthorized individuals alter the appearance or content of a website, often to display messages or political statements.
A group identifying itself as Nullsec Philippines claimed responsibility for the defacement through a Facebook post. It criticized corruption and called for greater transparency and accountability in government.
“The Filipino people entrusted you with power, responsibility, and the duty to serve the nation, not personal interests, political dynasties, or corrupt networks,” the group said in its statement.
The organization further emphasized the importance of public accountability, stating that citizens deserve truth and transparency from public officials.
Visitors attempting to access the Senate website were met with a maintenance notice informing users that the portal was temporarily unavailable.
The incident occurred as the Senate continued heightened security measures, with employees under work from home arrangements from June 10 to 11 and visitors temporarily barred from entering Senate premises due to reported security threats.
“We assure the public that protecting the integrity and availability of our systems remains a top priority. We continue to closely monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary,” the Senate said.
The Senate also thanked the public for its patience and understanding as authorities work to restore and safeguard the reliability of its online platforms.
